Sat 27th & Sun 28th May 11-17h Butoh Workshop at Evolution Arts.
“My dance is far removed from conventions and techniques, it is the unveiling of the inner life… Again and again we are reborn. It is not enough simply to be born of the mother’s womb. Many births are necessary. Be reborn always and everywhere. Again and again.” Tatsumi Hijikata
Butoh is a dance, philosophy and method created in Japan by Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno. It is born from within and connects the individual essence with nature, the universe, and the cycles of life and death. This workshop will work on the elements of metamorphosis, presence, readiness, contrast, dance through images and tension between opposites. Yael shares 20 years of experience working with masters like Kazuo Ohno, Tadashi Endo, Yumiko Yoshioka and Hijikata’s widow- Motofuji San, among others.

Tue 30 May 2017 8pm Jo Tremarco – Dying on My Feet (Work in Progress) at Liverpool’s Physical Fest
I have the pleasure to direct Joanne in her 2nd faze of development of this moving piece of work.
Imagine you have 2 bodies. One you move in every day and one you move in when you dream. Where does the dream body go after death?
Tremarco returns to Physical Fest, after being awarded last year’s bursary, to take a closer look at ‘death’ the elephant in the ‘living’ room. Drawing on end of life conversations with her mother, training as a death doula and adventures as a Lucid Dreamer to invent a comic-tragic odyssey of the soul.
Supported by Arts Council England.

Sat 1st & Sun 2nd- ‘The Secret Life of Objects’ Workshop in Barcelona.

The Secret Life of Objects Workshop at Evolution Arts, Brighton
It takes years for a baby to start identifying things, to learn that every object has a function and a name. As adults, we can break these rules and discover the object beyond its functionality, listen to the world and realize that everything is alive. And suddenly life becomes much more mysterious, playful and interesting…
Open for actors, Dancers, Performers, artists and/or anyone who would like to develop their creativity this workshop offers an immersion into the universe of objects and materials uniting distinct and complementary practices and experiences. Yael draws on her vast experience of physical and visual theatre, Butoh, Dance and mime in order to explore how to creatively relate to material, objects and space, how to listen to them, explore them as partners, and instigators of characters and physical states, how to transform them and allow ourselves to be transformed by them.

Sunday 13 November 2pm-5pm – Butoh Workshop with Yael Karavan, sharing nearly 20 years of experience working with the Original Butoh Masters in Japan.
Butoh (dance of transformation) is an avant-garde dance philosophy/method created in Japan at the end of the 1950s. The workshop will explore the main elements of Butoh, including metamorphoses, dance through imagery, presence, alignment, awareness and the tension between opposites. The aim is to free the body from its mundane pre-conceived set of gestures in order to access a deeper and more authentic essence of movement and archetypal expression. Yael has been a Butoh practitioner for nearly 20 years and has trained with numerous Butoh masters in Japan.
Suitable for complete beginners and those with experience in dance, movement, somatic disciplines or performing arts.

20th, 21th, 22th- 6.30pm Memories Lullaby, Part of Brighton Fringe at the Warren Studio 3.
Memories of Lullaby is a beautiful and delicate show i have been directing in the last 2 years. Taking as a starting point the memories of Saras Feijoo, having been braught up in lively and agressive Caracas, Venezuela, the show opens a window into the unbelievably harsh reality people are currently living in. It’s also food for thought about how our lives can change from one day to the next, leaving citizens helpless and hopeless. The show combines story telling, live painting and physical/visual performance, it is not an easy show, but we trace it delicately with multiple layers of emotional landscapes. Recommended! and not just because i am involved! Hope to see you there.

Free Workshop with Yael Karavan, as part of the development process of D-Code, in Brighton.

HabitUs (working title) – is an R&D for a new solo performance in collaboration with musician Carl Beukman, exploring the relationship between verbal languages, dance, sound and the body. The piece responds to our increasingly globalized, multicultural world where more and more people seem to be fragments of nationalities and places.
Thanks to the kind support of Arts Council England, this research has began with some inspiring sessions with Wendy Houstoun as mentor, Lou Cope and Dorothy Max Prior as dramaturgues.
Look up this space with some workshops and open work in progress presentations…

A week R&D for the new solo in collaboration with musician Carl Beukman in The Hague, Holland…
Butoh Brighton season is back!
and will begin with a Butoh week-end Workshop led by Yael Karavan
1st& 2nd of March 11am-4.30pm
@The Marlborough Theatre, 4 Princes Street, Brighton, BN2 1RD.
‘”Again and again we are reborn. It is not enough simply to be born of the mother’s womb. Many births are necessary. Be reborn always and everywhere. Again and again.”
Tatsumi Hijikata .
Butoh is an avant garde dance philosophy/ method, created in Japan at the end of the 50ese by Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno.
It is not a technique but rather a method and an approach to dance which stems from within us and thus connecting us to our essence, nature, the universe and the cycles of life & death.
The main elements that will be explored are metamorphoses, dance through imagery, presence, awareness and the tension between opposites. The aim is to free the body from its mundane preconceived set of gestures and movements and thus allowing us to access a deeper and more authentic essence of movement and archetypal expression.

May
Sat 4th of May –The Geomancers & the whispering waters Yael Karavan & Bruno Humberto @ Unorthodox in Wandsworth Festival.
The centre of Wandsworth is crossed by a river. Sometimes this river is silent. Other times it speaks so loud that objects of unknown origin and filled with memories are spit out from the water. on the other side of the bridge, opposite the old brewery, people are gathering to listen to this tale that themselves are part of. The Geomancers and the whispering waters is a performance about the memories of a river bank and the imagination that is sparked when we look at things with bare hands.
Geomancers are a duo of saltimbanques that re-imagine space through physical theatre, music and dance mediations. As they listen to the murmurs that characterize each place, they underline and amplify the invisible and the playfulness that remains attached to each location.

Look through a strange face, your own, Change position to place you in another emotional landscape. Travel back in time. Find another “I-u” and then another. Many of you. Explore dance as a discipline of insanity unfolds to serve your human evolution.
With Yael: We each have within us a ship of fools. These fools are the different features of our personality living within us. Each one of them leads the boat at one time or another in our lives and tries to express it in his own way. We allow these fools to reveal their stories as a journey through our personal archetypes.
With Ephia: We are looking to enter the field to be confused with it. We change skin. We experience the passage of time. We change density. The interior felt evolve with changes in posture. We strive to exceed the limits of our person, to exist otherwise, many times. To do this, we do not hesitate to let ourselves be guided by an image or an object.
‘There is neither misleading nor wrong, only fools or men foolish enough to embark on a ship without a sail or rudder. Everything is possible in the land of fools. Their boat might as well not move. For the passengers, only the present moment has passed to sing, to drink, to play and dance.’

9th- Butoh- stillness through movement
a Workshop in collaboation with Mim King & Carolina Diaz at the Bodhi Garden
It is not enough simply to be born of the mother’s womb. Many births are necessary. Be reborn always and everywhere. T. Hijikata
Butoh is an avant garde dance philosophy/method that explores our connection to nature, our ancestors, the cycles of life and death and the tension between opposites. It first appeared in Japan in 1959, in Tatsumi Hijikata’s piece “Forbidden Colours” (Kinjiki), based in Yukio Mishima’s novel of the same name. Influenced by the cultural background of Buddhism as well as surrealism and expressionism, Hijikata’s aim was to “uncover the dance already happening in the body.” In its rejection of conditioned movement and emphasis on body awareness Butoh has the quality of a meditative practice.

26th -27th WORKSHOP at Coachwerks
Serendipity- the performer’s pleasure-
The BODY SPEAKS
‘I see the body as the most primal tool of communication and as such feel the need to combine various dance and performance disciplines in order to broaden its possibilities. I am developing methods to extend the boundaries of dance as well as stimulate the imagination of the body for both the performers and their audience. In the process of my work I explore gestures that come from within the body and thus extract movement that is beyond form and shape, but which contains life and emotion.’ Y.K
